Ceramides

Ceramide is an essential component of intercellular lipids within the skin's stratum corneum, playing a vital regulatory role in life processes such as cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and aging.
Source
It is primarily obtained through natural extraction, chemical synthesis, or microbial fermentation.
Purposes
It is commonly used moisturizing and reparative ingredients in the cosmetics field.
Efficacy
Common cosmetic application and benefits of ceramides [1]:
Ceramides covalently bind to involucrin within the cornified envelope of keratinocytes, linking the lipid matrix to these cells and strengthening the skin's barrier function.
▪ Moisturization
Ceramide promotes the expression of filaggrin and its mRNA. As profilaggrin transitions from the granular layer to the stratum corneum, it undergoes enzymatic hydrolysis into polycarboxylic acids, which provide moisturizing benefits. Filaggrin is not only a crucial structural protein but also a primary source of natural moisturizing factors.
Applications
It is mainly used in moisturizing and reparative products to alleviate dryness and restore the skin barrier.

Panthenol

Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, is the precursor to vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid). As a stable form of vitamin B5, panthenol offers moisturizing, soothing, and reparative benefits, acting as an excellent protective agent for skin and hair [1].
Source
Panthenol is currently produced primarily via chemical synthesis.
Purposes
It is commonly used moisturizing and reparative ingredients in the cosmetics field. It helps prevent dryness, wrinkles, inflammation, and sun damage while maintaining skin suppleness and elasticity and repairing damage.
Efficacy
When added to skin and hair care products, panthenol molecules penetrate the skin and hair, where they are rapidly converted into vitamin B5 by enzymes to provide moisturizing, soothing, and reparative effects [2].
Application
Panthenol is mainly used in moisturizing and soothing products to alleviate dryness, retain skin moisture, and soothe/repair sensitive or irritated skin.
In hair care products, it maintains shine and suppleness while conditioning the scalp.
