  • Alternatives to Animal Testing

    To safeguard animal welfare, PROYA minimizes the use of laboratory animals during product development and actively establishes and implements alternative testing methods. Where regulations permit and product safety is assured, the company proactively adopts advanced scientific technologies and methods, including in silico modeling, in vitro assays, and Integrated Approaches to Testing and Assessment (IATA), alongside risk assessments, to replace animal testing.

    Regarding experimental methodology, PROYA utilizes a variety of non-animal testing systems—including 3D reconstructed human skin models, ex vivo organ models, and specialized cellular and microbial models—to scientifically evaluate safety indicators for cosmetic ingredients, such as skin and eye irritation, sensitization, phototoxicity, and genotoxicity. In vitro test results also support clinical suitability assessments, providing scientific validation for the safety of both raw materials and finished products.

    Furthermore, the company actively promotes and participates in artificial skin technology innovation and the formulation of standards for alternative testing methods, aiming to drive the advancement and optimization of experimental techniques within China's cosmetics industry. In 2020, Proya Cosmetics invested in Hangzhou Regenovo Biotechnology Co., Ltd. to co-establish the "Joint Experimental Center for High Throughput 3D Printing of Asian Skin Model," focusing on the R&D of artificial skin testing technologies.

    Meanwhile, PROYA is driving the development of alternative testing methods in the domestic cosmetics sector, aligning China's toxicological testing with international standards. Adhering to the principles of cruelty-free practices and the "3Rs" for laboratory animals (Reduction, Replacement, Refinement), we have collaborated with organizations such as the Zhejiang Institute for Food and Drug Control, the China Association of Fragrance, Flavour and Cosmetic Industries, and the Zhejiang Health Products & Cosmetics Industry Association to help establish several group standards for animal-alternative testing methods. Of the standards, the In Vitro Test Method for Eye Irritation of Hair Dye Cosmetics—Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability Test, In Vitro Test Method for Eye Irritation of Eye Cream Cosmetics—Chicken Embryo Chorionallantois Vascular Test, In Vitro Test Method for Skin Irritation of Face Cream Cosmetics—In Vitro Irritation Test Using a Reconstructed Skin Model, In Vitro Test Method for Skin Allergic Reactions of Hair-Dyeing Cosmetics—Human Cell Line Activation Test, In Vitro Test Method for Skin Allergenicity of Skin-Lightening and Spot-Removing Cosmetics—Human Cell Line Activation Assay, Mildness Evaluation of Leave-On Cosmetics—Reconstructed Epidermal Model Tissue Viability Assay, and Mildness Evaluation of Rinse-Off Cosmetics—Reconstructed Epidermal Model Tissue Viability Assay, among others, have been published by the Zhejiang Health Products & Cosmetics Industry Association on the national group standards information platform and have officially taken effect.
